Spring Term 1 - It's Good to be Me!
Welcome to the Spring term in Rowan Class! Please take a look at our topic web for this term.
Science - Ourselves
During our Science lessons we have been learning about the human body and looking at how they change as we grow up. We have also discussed how our 5 senses are linked to different parts of the body. Here are some photographs of some human bodies made out of play dough, which we labelled to demonstrate our knowledge of the human body.
This week we were lucky enough to have a visit from Mrs Rhys who talked to us about her Nursing experience and we had a fun game of pass the parcel with questions, to test our knowledge on Florence Nightingale. We learnt about the importance of staying hygienic and washing our hands thoroughly, for as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice! We also saw an effective demonstration of how germs can be passed on if we don't wash our hands thoroughly. Thank you so much for your time Mrs Rhys!
Parent Activity Session
This we were lucky to share our Maths learning with our grown ups! Some of our growns up came in to see how we have been using equipment to help us in learning our number bonds. We showed them how confident we are using a number line! It is important not just to know our number bonds, but be able to represent them in different ways. Thank you to all who were able to join us!
We have been learning how to draw a portrait. We started off looking closely at the shape of our face and where our features were. After sketching with a pencil we then experimented with colour. We have also had a go and drawing portraits of others from pictures. We used oil pastilles to add colour.
This term the children will be investigating what a difference Florence Nightingale made to nursing and hospitals. So far the children have been looking at images and asking questions. If you click on the image below you can watch a video together all about Florence Nightingale's life and why we remember her.
The children are currently working through Phase 5 of Letters and Sounds. There is a lot to learn! So we would encourage you to keep practising at home. Click on the link below to visit the website Phonics Play where there are a number of free games they can play to continue their phonics learning at home.
The Proud Cloud
As part of our topic 'It's good to be me,' we want to celebrate achievements beyond the classroom. Big or small! We are inviting the children to reflect on things that make them feel proud. We will then add them to our proud cloud in class for all to see. I'm sure Rowan class has lots to feel proud of!
We have been finishing off our learning about the Christmas story this week with some creative learning! We reordered pictures from the story and we painted the Nativity scene. The children then took turns role playing as the 3 Wise Men. They dressed up and recorded their efforts on the Ipad.
This week in our Maths learning we have been learning how to use equipment to support our learning. Not only will it help us to become more independent, but it helps us to represent our understanding. On Friday the children demonstrated their understanding of pairs that add up to 20 using Numicon, bead strings and number lines. I was very impressed!
