We are part of the Plymouth CAST family of schools. We are a Catholic school welcoming children of all faiths to learn and grow with us. The education and wellbeing of our children is at the heart of everything we do. Our Gospel Values of humility, compassion, kindness, justice, forgiveness, integrity, peace and courage are integral to our whole school community. We inspire all our children to do their best, be their best and have respect for themselves, others and the world we live in. Choosing a school for your child is really important for any parent or carer. If you would like to find out more about our school you are welcome to visit us to meet or wonderful staff and pupils. Please email admin@stjo.uk or phone 01395 264875 to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you.

Maths

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School we encourage our children to develop a deep conceptual understanding through exploration, reasoning and problem solving of all areas.  As mathematicians, we expect our children to explain and articulate their understanding and become fluent in number so they can use known number facts to make efficient choices with calculations.

We aim to develop resilient learners and our children take time to deepen their understanding of mathematical structures through the use of resources and representations.   We want the children to see maths as being relevant and purposeful to their lives.

At St Joseph's we follow the Power Maths planning for Maths, which provides a mastery approach to teaching and learning.  Please take a look at the presentation below for further details.

Calculation Policy

Please review our calculation policy to further understand the progression in calculation across the year groups.

Progression of skills

Please see the links below which document the progression in mathematics skills as taught at St Joseph's Primary School.

SEND

The structure of Power Maths relies on small steps in learning, facilitating all children, including those with SEN in making progress together and accessing the same subject matter and material.  Some SEN children access Maths at their stage, not age.

Concrete resources are available and provided as and when needed to support the development of cognition and learning.    Power Maths uses key pictoral representations that are supported by concrete resources.

Widgits are used to support children with key vocabulary, which is discussed at the start of a new unit and used throughout.

Times Tables Rock Stars!

We have signed up to an online Maths learning area called Times Tables Rock Stars!  This will allow children to play interactive times tables games pitched at their level both at school and at home.  Teachers will be able to see how often children are logging on and may direct children to particular activities.  Log in details have been sent home to each child from Year 2 up.  Please follow the link below to access.  Enjoy!

Parent Activity Sessions

We have run parent activity sessions to share how we teach Maths at St Joseph's.  If you would like to know more about how we teach these skills in each year group, please check with your child's teacher for further information.
