Reading and writing are largely covered through the daily Literacy lesson. When teaching reading, we use a wide range of carefully selected commercial schemes. For Key Stage 1 we use the phonics scheme 'Letters and Sounds'. This allows us to match a great variety of books to the individual child’s needs and interests. The books are graded into 14 colour levels, in accordance with National Curriculum levels of attainment. The children are helped to select books from the colour level indicated by the teacher.

Throughout Key Stage 1 there are regular ‘book times’, when the teacher has the opportunity to assess each child’s progress. The children are encouraged to bring a book home to read with you every day.

Our handwriting scheme aims to enable children to develop a clear, fluent, legible and fast style of joined writing. Guidance on the teaching of reading and writing is given to the parents of all children.
