Monday 6th September 2010
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school and the first term in Year 4. This letter is to give you some information about the topics being covered during this term.
This term, we shall be focusing on Greece in both History and Geography. In History, we shall focus on Ancient Greece and within Geography we shall focus on the country today, looking at aspects such as climate, tourism and the country’s place within Europe. We shall also be carrying out art projects within this topic.
We are continuing to follow the national strategies in both Literacy and Numeracy, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to continue to hear your child read at home and to practice their tables with them. I shall also be working regularly on spellings based on the work we are covering in class each week. Thank you for your support with this. In Science, we shall be looking at Materials, including insulators, solids and liquids.
Our first topic in RE this term is Creation. This unit of work is designed to give more information about the story of creation. It is designed to help children explore the concept of ‘image and likeness of God’ and because God is in all of us we are called to respect and value our similarities and differences. In valuing and respecting those similarities and differences, we are called to be united together to eradicate injustice and give dignity to the human person. Through knowledge of the Jewish faith, the children will explore the skills of reverence and respect and reflect on how to apply these in their own lives of faith.
In PE, children will be going to the Tennis Centre on a Wednesday afternoon, and at school, the focus will be gymnastics.
Our focus of work in Design and Technology is “Pastry”. Children will be looking at different ways in which they can design pastry, following a focus of work and exploration of the humble jam tart!
We shall be looking at ways in which we can use text and pictures in different ways in ICT, and using these skills to design a newspaper. We shall also be looking at the use of temperature equipment, and use this in our work in Science.
In music, we shall be working with the Music Express programme, and in the run up to Christmas, will be working with songs we will be singing for our service in December.
Finally, if you have any questions, queries or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to come and see me. I am really looking forward to teaching your child this year, and am certain it will be a successful one for all of us.
Yours faithfully,
Robert Hoare. |

Dear Parents,
We are all looking forward to a busy final term together in Class One which started successfully with our trip to Powderham Castle and we wanted to let you know what is happening for the children for the remainder of the term.
Religious Education: Our topic is currently Easter, which follows on with Change and Treasures.
Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL): Through circle time, discussions and fun activities the class will learn about differences and similarities between themselves and their peers. In the second half of the term we will be looking ahead to the Changes that will take place at the end of this year and preparing the children for their move into Year 2 in September.
English: Language and literacy work will continue to take place through role-play, speaking, listening, handwriting, reading, writing and phonics activities inside and outside the daily Literacy lesson. The children will experience fiction and non-fiction texts. These will include information texts, recounts, poetry and stories with fantasy settings.
Your child will continue to bring a reading book home from school daily. Please continue to read with them each night as the continued progress the children are making this year is thanks to the additional practise the children are having outside of school as well as within the classroom environment.
Mathematics: Through daily maths activities we shall continue to practise and develop oral and mental skills. The children will continue to build on their individual targets. We shall be putting a greater focus on children using and applying their maths skills in a variety of contexts, for example with money, measuring and time.
Science: Our first unit is Growing Plants and the children will investigate and describe different plants. We shall also be growing our own plants in school and finding out what they need to keep them healthy. The next unit will focus on Light and Dark. Children will investigate the different sources of lights, look at shadows and the differences between day and night.
ICT: This term the children will learn about how to stay safe on the internet. They are continuing to build their computer skills in addition to using the RM Maths programme.
Art: In the second half of this term we will be looking at making sculptures in the natural environment.
History: We are currently enjoying looking at Victorian homes after our trip to Powderham and this will link to our DT project of creating a room for a house.
Geography: We will be carrying out a mini topic looking at how to make our local area safer.
Music: We regularly learn rhymes, sing songs and explore the sounds our voices and instruments make. In addition the children will continue to receive an hour of music each week from our specialist music teacher, Mrs Jepps.
PE: The children receive a weekly lesson with Mrs Little and also continue to follow LEAP into LIFE and our daily physical activities to develop physical literacy.
We are really looking forward to our last term with the children and hope that your child has a very happy time. If you need further information or we can help in any way please come and ask.
Yours Sincerely
Miss H Carey

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to our final term in Class 2. Your children continue to be a joy to teach and I look forward to another term in their company.
This term we are pleased to welcome Miss Korina Livermore, a student from Exeter University, who will be with us until July completing her final teaching practice.
As I have said before I firmly believe that children learn best when they are happy. With this in mind if you or they have any problems at all please let Mrs Wilson, Miss Livermore or myself know so that we can hopefully deal with small problems before they have a chance to become big ones.
We will of course be covering all of the subjects of the National Curriculum this term while trying to adopt a more cross curricular approach whenever possible. Our topics in Religious Education for this term are Easter. In Education for Personal Relationships we will be looking at Relationships and Changes.
In Literacy we will build on the reading and writing skills already learned, developing independent writing, extending use of grammar and continuing to work on handwriting skills. We will be following units of work in Literacy covering poetry, narrative and non-fiction forms of writing. Our spelling focuses will be prefixes, suffixes and compound words. The test of whether the children retain and understand these new words is whether they can use and adapt the knowledge when writing in class. The children will continue to bring home reading books each day. I know it is difficult and we all lead busy lives but it does make a real difference if the children have the opportunity to enjoy and share their books with their parents. Even when a child can apparently ‘read’ there is still a range of skills still to be developed.
In Numeracy we will continue to consolidate previous work and will then cover
-
Number - reading, writing and ordering numbers to 100 and then 1000, tens and units place value and addition and subtraction, simple fractions, addition and subtraction to 20 mentally, repeated addition and early multiplication and division. We will be concentrating on knowledge of number bonds to 20 with ‘rapid recall’ and will begin to learn the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.
-
Shape, Space and Measures – recognizing hexagons, pentagons, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and describing them in terms of vertices, sides/edges and faces; recognizing right-angled corners in 2D and 3D shapes; understanding rotation of angle; turning through right angles ¼, ½ and whole turns; recognizing different types of movement including translation, rotation and reflection.
We will be taking a topic-based, cross-curricular approach to our work in the afternoons. Throughout the topic, The Seaside, we will study Geography, History, Art, Literacy and some aspects of Science. As part of the topic we will be making regular trips to the beach to find out more about the world in which we live.
In addition to the areas of Science covered in our topic we will also be looking at ‘Forces’ and ‘Electricity’. In ICT we will continue to develop keyboard and control skills, finding information and controlling a floor turtle.
We are also planning a whole day trip to Totnes Castle as a follow-up to our Norman Conquest topic which proved so popular in the Autumn Term. Details to follow.
Again a few practical requests! Please ensure that your children’s clothing is clearly marked and encourage your child to take full responsibility for their belongings. It is school policy not to bring toys to school. We have invested in a wide range of play equipment so the children are very well catered for during break times.
I hope we will all have a very good term. Please do not hesitate to contact any of us if you have any queries at all.

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to what I hope will be a happy and successful second term in Class 2. Let me begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year and thanking you very much for all your kind cards and gifts at Christmas.
We firmly believe that children learn best when they are happy. With this in mind if you or they have any problems at all please let Mrs. Rookes or myself know so that we can hopefully deal with small problems before they have a chance to become big ones.
We will of course be covering all of the subjects of the National Curriculum this term and adopting a cross-curricular approach whenever possible. Our topics in Religious Education are Special People, Meals and Right and Wrong Choices. In Education for Personal Relationships we will continue to use the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning materials. This term our topics ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to be Me’ focus on building self-esteem, setting and achieving personal goals and being aware of the feelings of others.
In Literacy we will build on the reading and writing skills already learned, developing independent writing, extending use of grammar and continuing to work on handwriting skills. I am sending home a copy of the Key Vocabulary that the children should be able to read and spell by the end of Year 2. I would ask you to keep this copy to hand and to spend a few minutes each day reading and writing a few words to slowly build up a sight and spelling vocabulary. The test of whether the children retain and understand these new words is whether they can use and adapt the knowledge when writing in class. The children will continue to bring home reading books daily.
We will be concentrating on knowledge of number bonds to 20 ( i.e. the children should be able to add and subtract any two numbers up to twenty without having to use any apparatus including fingers!) and will continue to learn the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.
-
Shape, Space and Measures – recognising hexagons, pentagons, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and describing them in terms of vertices, sides/edges and faces; recognising right-angled corners in 2D and 3D shapes; understanding rotation of angle; turning through right angles ¼, ½ and whole turns; recognising different types of movement including translation, rotation and reflection.
In History our topic is the Great Fire of London. All of the children responded to our history topic last term very enthusiastically so we hope to harness this enthusiasm in our new topic. Our Geography topic ‘An Island Home’ will give us the opportunity to look more closely at island life in the Channel Islands as well as comparing and contrasting it with our own lives in Devon. This topic will be the main focus of our work in the afternoons.
In Science we will be studying ‘Health and Growth’ looking at what our bodies need if we are to remain fit and healthy. In Art and Design we will be designing and making our own version of a map of an island, painting with watercolours, drawing from pictures taken with the digital camera and painting portraits of each other. In ICT we will continue to develop keyboard and control skills, finding information and controlling a floor turtle.
Again a few practical requests! Please ensure that your children’s clothing is clearly marked and encourage your child to take full responsibility for their belongings. It is school policy not to bring toys to school. We have invested in a wide range of play equipment so the children are very well catered for during break times.
Finally I must say a huge thank you to Kathleen Wilson who has worked tirelessly since October covering for Mrs Rookes. She has been great fun to work with and we will all miss her energy and enthusiasm. I am delighted to say that Mrs Rookes daughter and grandson are home from hospital, the baby is doing well and Caroline will be back with us on Monday 11 January.
I hope we will all have a very good term. Please do not hesitate to contact either of us if you have any queries at all.

Class 6
26th April 2010
Dear Parents and Carers
We hope you all enjoyed a sunny Easter break. We’re looking forward to working with your children for their last term with us, a very important time.
Firstly, we need to let you know that the SATS tests will take place from Monday 10th to Thursday 13th May, in English and Maths. Until this time, the homework routine will be more or less as it has been, with English and Maths tasks set on Tuesday and Friday, but spelling won’t be set on Mondays. After half term, homework will be researching and preparing for the Year Six public speaking competition at the end of term. The children will give their presentation in class and the final ten will then speak to the judges, who will award first, second and third place. They should aim to speak for three to five minutes on a topic of their choice, using cue cards but no props.
After half term, we will be covering sex education in class, which is taught sensitively and in line with Catholic thinking on the importance of family life and positive relationships. If you have any questions, you are welcome to call in and ask us about it. We use some BBC video material “Growing up” and there are opportunities for the children to ask questions.
Our RE topics this term will be: Easter, Freedom and Responsibility, and Special Places.
In Geography, we will be studying Mountains and Coasts
Art will encompass People in Action, and we’ll be making Vehicles in Design and technology.
In Science, our topics will be Habitats and Interpendence, Microorganisms and Keeping Healthy, which will tie in with our PSHE work on Relationships and Changes.
We’re reading a non-fiction text in French, about Space.
We want to make this term as much fun as we can, and we’re busy organising a Big Day Out to Woodlands, as well as a bowling trip before we arrive at PGL; dates and costs to follow as soon as possible.
Some dates for your diary (more to follow)
- ECC Welcome evenings – Monday 5th and Tuesday 7th July
- ECC Welcome days for the children – Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th July
- Public Speaking Final for year 6 and the winners from classes 3,4 and 5 – Wednesday 14th July
Our door is always open and you are very welcome to come and discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s progress at this important time.

We are continuing to follow the national strategies in both Literacy and Numeracy, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to continue to hear your child read at home and to practice their tables with them. I shall also be working regularly on spellings based on the work we are covering in class each week. Thank you for your support with this.
Our topics in RE this term are Meals, which focuses on some of the church’s celebrations and in particular the Mass. St Joseph’s School, Exmouth 2 September 2009 Dear Parents, Welcome back to school for the Autumn Term. We hope that you had a restful summer. The children are happy to be back and have begun what we hope, will be a very successful year in Class One. This year, Mrs Ponting and Mrs Sims will continue to share the responsibility for teaching the class. Mrs Ponting will teach for four days with Mrs Sims taking over on Fridays. The teaching assistant, Mrs Ellis provides support throughout the week. The purpose of this letter is to inform you about some of the work we will be covering this term. Ourselves is an overall theme. Links between different subject areas will be made where appropriate, as they are rarely taught in isolation. Religious Education: Our topics will be Families, Together and Waiting we will also spend a week on another faith, this term looking at Judaism. Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL): The first school wide topic is called New Beginnings. Through circle time, discussions and fun activities the class will learn what they can do to make school a safe place for all to learn. They will begin to recognise their feelings and interpret the feelings of others. We will then look at Getting on and falling out. The children will recognise how to be a good friend and begin to see things from another point of view. They will learn what is needed to work in a group and some ways to manage their feelings. English: Language and literacy work takes place through role-play, speaking, listening, handwriting, reading, writing and phonics activities inside and outside the daily Literacy lesson. The children will experience fiction and non-fiction texts. These will include stories with familiar settings, stories and rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns, signs, labels, captions, poetry about the senses lists and instructions. Your child will continue to take a reading book home from school each day. If possible, please read with them each night. This should be an enjoyable experience. At this point in the school year, you may find that your child will re-read some books from the early stages of our reading schemes. This is because your child needs to have a firm foundation, upon which he/she can confidently continue to make progress through the reading stages. Mathematics: Through daily maths activities we shall practise and develop oral and mental skills. The children will read and write numbers and count confidently to at least 20. They will learn to recall addition and subtraction facts. We shall also be working with money, investigating 2D and 3D shapes and measuring. This term I will be sending home a weekly mathematics activity. I hope your child will enjoy sharing what they have been doing in school. This ‘homework’ will be set on Thursdays to be returned the following week. Science: Our first unit is Ourselves and the children will investigate and use their senses and learn how senses help us to explore the world. They also learn that humans and other animals move and grow. They will be encouraged to observe and describe living things. Next we will focus on Sound and Hearing. The children will develop their understanding of a variety of sounds. They will be shown how to begin to record observations and draw conclusions. ICT: Children will learn that a computer can be used to represent real and fantasy situations. They will use simple games and modelling software to create pictures and communicate information. The children will begin to use ICT to label and classify information, to represent data graphically and to support all other subjects. History: The children will investigate the question How are our toys different from those in the past? They will describe old and new toys. They will learn whether something is new or old and recognise similarities and differences in artefacts. Art: The children will explore Self-portraits. They will look at images of children in drawings, paintings and photographs and talk about artists’ self-portraits. They will use drawing and painting materials and techniques to communicate ideas about themselves. Design and Technology: The class will investigate one aspect of what our bodies need to be healthy as we try to eat more fruit and vegetables. Activities will include identifying fruit and vegetables, tasting and evaluating different combinations of fruit and learning basic food hygiene skills. The children will plan and make a fruit salad, fruit juice ‘cocktail’ or fruit smoothie. Music: We regularly learn rhymes, sing songs and explore the sounds our voices and instruments make. In addition the children will receive an hour of music each week from our specialist teacher, Mrs Jepps. PE: The children will follow take part in daily physical activitiy. We follow the Leap into Life initiative for Foundation and KS1 children. It is designed to help them acquire sound fundamental movement skills enabling them to access, enjoy and receive the health benefits from a wide range of activities in their KS2 years, adolescence and adult life. The children also have a longer P.E. lesson once a week, with our specialist teacher, Mrs Little. As in Reception class, water bottles are provided for the children to use in class and we actively promote a daily fruit/milk time. Could your child always have suitable clothing to keep them warm and dry then we can make the most of our outdoor environment. We are really looking forward to the new school year and hope that your child has a very happy time. If you need further information or we can help in any way please come and ask, we look forward to meeting you soon. Yours Sincerely Mrs K. Ponting Mrs G. Ellis Mrs K. Sims |

Autumn Dear Parents, Welcome to what I hope will be a successful term for your child in Class 2. It is a real pleasure to have the opportunity to teach your children and I hope we will have a great year together. Mrs Rookes and I firmly believe that children learn best when they are happy. With this in mind if you or they have any problems at all please let one of us know so that we can hopefully deal with small problems before they have a chance to become big ones. We will of course be covering all of the subjects of the National Curriculum this term and adopting a cross-curricular approach whenever possible. In R.E. schools in our diocese are trialling a new scheme of work. The focus of this topic is ourselves as part of a family and what it means to belong to different groups or families which include our homes, our school, our churches and our local community. The topics in Education for Personal Relationships will be New Beginnings and Good to be Me focussing on belonging, self-awareness, managing feelings, understanding others’ feelings and making choices. In Literacy we will continue to build on the reading and writing skills already learned, developing independent writing, extending use of grammar and continuing to work on handwriting skills. The children will be working on applying their existing knowledge of letters and sounds and extending this during the daily phonics lesson, taking every opportunity to practise their word building skills. They will also have in their folders a copy of the key words that they should be able to read and spell in the course of the year. Additional homework in either maths or English will be set each Thursday to be returned on Monday. In Numeracy we will continue to work on RM maths in the ICT suite each day and to cover during our daily maths lesson: i) Number - reading, writing and ordering numbers to 100 and then 1000, tens and units place value, simple fractions, addition and subtraction to 20 mentally, repeated addition and early multiplication. ii) Shape, Space and Measures – recognizing hexagons, pentagons, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and describing them in terms of vertices, sides/edges and faces; recognizing right-angled corners in 2D and 3D shapes; understanding rotation of angle; turning through right angles ¼, ½ and whole turns; recognizing different types of movement including translation, rotation and reflection. In History our topic is famous people. We will be looking at King William 1 and covering such areas as the Battle of Hastings, the Domesday Book, the Bayeux Tapestry and Mediaeval life and living in a castle. In Science we will be studying ‘Materials and how they change’ and ‘Variation’ in animals, plants and humans. In Art and Design we will be designing and making fridge magnets, making our own version of the Bayeux Tapestry, painting and drawing from pictures taken with the digital camera, looking at a range of buildings and recording them using a variety of media. In ICT we will continue to develop keyboard and control skills. Mrs Jepps and Mrs Little will continue to teach Music and P.E. to the whole class on Wednesday afternoons. A few practical requests! Please ensure that your children’s clothing is clearly marked and I would prefer that the children do not bring toys to school. We have invested in a wide range of play equipment so the children are very well catered for during break times. I hope we will all have a very good term. Please do not hesitate to contact either of us if you have any queries at all. Mrs. C. Doyle. Mrs. C. Rookes. Class Teacher. Teaching Assistant. |

Dear Parents, Welcome to Class 5 and a new school year at St. Joseph’s School. This letter is to give you some information about the topics being covered during the Autumn term. This term, our History topic is Growing up during the Second World War. We are hoping to have a visit from staff at Exeter Museum which I hope will bring our work alive, and I shall send further details of this as soon as I have them. Our Geography topic this term is Japan, and we shall be focusing on what it is like growing up in Japan, and some of their customs. We are continuing to follow the national strategies in both Literacy and Numeracy, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to continue to hear your child read at home and to practice their tables with them. Thank you for your support with this. In Science, we shall be focusing on gases and the changing states of materials. In RE, schools in our diocese are trialling a new scheme of work, and our first topic is Ourselves. The focus of this topic is ourselves as part of a family, and what it means to belong to different groups or “families”, which include our homes, our school, our churches and local communities. I shall give you details of further topic areas in RE as soon as I have them available. Our focus of work in Art is containers and our design focus will be looking at the way in which tea is marketed and packaged. We shall be exploring the concept of Databases in ICT, as well as using software to create maps and models of places. Music this term will be taught by Mrs Jepps, and PE will be taught by Mrs Little, both on a Wednesday afternoon. The children have been given a home/school book, in which they will record what their homework is, as well as keeping a record of what they are reading. Class 5 will be getting homework twice a week, usually on a Tuesday and a Friday. These will mainly consist of work we are covering in English and Maths, but may from time to time include work from other subject areas. Finally, if you have any questions, queries or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to come and see me. Yours faithfully, Robert Hoare. |

Dear Parents, Welcome back to our final term in Class 2. Your children continue to be a joy to teach and I look forward to another term in their company. You may already have noticed some ‘personnel’ changes in class this term. Mrs Rookes will be absent for a few weeks looking after her son who has had major surgery. Mrs Kathleen Wilson will be covering Caroline’s absence and is very welcome. We are also pleased to welcome Mr Paul Armstrong, a student from Exeter University, who will be with us until 9 July completing his final teaching practice. As I have said before I firmly believe that children learn best when they are happy. With this in mind if you or they have any problems at all please let Mrs Wilson, Mr Armstrong or myself know so that we can hopefully deal with small problems before they have a chance to become big ones. We will of course be covering all of the subjects of the National Curriculum this term while trying to adopt a more cross curricular approach whenever possible. Our topics in Religious Education for this term are explained in the accompanying leaflet. In Education for Personal Relationships we will be looking at Relationships and Changes. In Literacy we will build on the reading and writing skills already learned, developing independent writing, extending use of grammar and continuing to work on handwriting skills. The children will bring home individual lists of words to be learned each week based on the key words that should be known by the end of Key Stage 1 and word families, groups of words using the same spelling pattern or words that they have been having difficulty with in their work in class. In Numeracy we will continue to consolidate previous work and will then cover i) Number - reading, writing and ordering numbers to 100 and then 1000, tens and units place value and addition and subtraction, simple fractions, addition and subtraction to 20 mentally, repeated addition and early multiplication and division. We will be concentrating on knowledge of number bonds to 20 with ‘rapid recall’ and will begin to learn the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.ii) Shape, Space and Measures – recognizing hexagons, pentagons, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and describing them in terms of vertices, sides/edges and faces; recognizing right-angled corners in 2D and 3D shapes; understanding rotation of angle; turning through right angles ¼, ½ and whole turns; recognizing different types of movement including translation, rotation and reflection. § We will be taking a topic-based, cross-curricular approach to our work in the afternoons. We are also planning a whole day trip to Totnes Castle on as a follow-up to our Norman Conquest topic which proved so popular in the Autumn Term. Mrs C Doyle. Mr P Armstrong Mrs K Wilson |

Class 5’s World War Two Day Children had a fantastic day, when Sergeant Martin and ARP Warden Williams visited St Joseph’s in January. The children prepared for the day by dressing up as children from the 1940’s. The girls looked great with their pigtails, and the boys remembered their gasmasks. We also had a few soldiers in the class. The children started the day by making evacuation labels with Mrs McKay. They were then introduced to Sergeant Martin and ARP Warden Williams, who explained what they would be doing. The children spent the morning learning how secret agents would be able to communicate information, through using Morse code. This was not as easy as it looked, but children managed to put their map and listening skills to good use and sent George, the spy, all the things he needed. Children spent time looking at evidence of rationing during the war, and presented their findings to each other. In the afternoon, the children took part in Air Raid Emergency Training. They learnt how to put out fires, comfort injured people and what to look out for following an air raid. Some children even spotted a bomb at the front of the school. We also decided they needed extra practice in scooping up incendiary bombs! A big thank you to Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, and the parents who spent the day helping us, and joining in with the fun we all had. |

Dear Parents, Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and to thank you all for the Christmas cards and gifts you so kindly gave to Mrs Ellis, Mrs Sims and I. Your thoughtfulness was very much appreciated. Here is an outline of the areas within the National Curriculum to be covered this term, linked where possible to the overall topic ‘Homes’. Language and literacy will be taught within a daily literacy lesson and through speaking, listening and phonic activities throughout the day. We will share traditional stories and rhymes, plays, fairy stories and poetry from a range of cultures including playground chants and action verses. Thank you for supporting your child by hearing him or her read each day. It should not be a cause of concern but your child may benefit by having extra reading or sound work in school. It will be targeted to their specific need and they may benefit from additional practice of these key skills at home. In Mathematics we will continue to explore addition and subtraction to at least 20. We will build on an understanding of place value, odd and even numbers, money and measure. The children will become more familiar with numbers to 100 and counting in twos, fives and tens. Our R.E. topics will be Journeys, Communion and Growing. Further details can be found on the separate sheet. In Science we will start with investigations into forces. After half term will look at identifying materials, investigate a range of materials for different purposes, and begin to understand that we choose one material over another based on its properties. In History we will be looking for similarities and differences between home life now and 100 years ago. I hope to organise an educational visit to support this aspect of the topic, but I am also on the hunt for any Victorian/Edwardian artefacts - tin bath? washing dolly? as these really help bring a topic to life. Design and Technology is linked to homes too, and we will look at creating stable structures.. Later this term the whole school will take part in a special Art week, where we will focus on the Austrian artist, Hundertwasser. I.C.T. skills will include how technology helps us to get information. Music and P.E. will continue to be delivered by our specialist teachers. I am looking forward to a very productive and happy term. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries at all. Yours sincerely Mrs Kate Ponting J |

Our work in class this term will cover the following topics:In Geography, we will study Mountains. In Science, we will be working on Healthy Living, which will be linked to our PSHE topic, Changes. After half term, we will be covering Sex Education, which is always approached in a sensitive and caring way, in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church. We do use some BBC video material. If you have any concerns at all about this, please feel very welcome to discuss them with us. We will be finishing our Torches in Design and Technology, and then starting Slippers and our Art work will be based around People in Action. Our RE topics will be Good News, Choices and Neighbours. After SATS, we are lucky to have Konflux Theatre coming to school to work on “Midsummer Night’s Dream” with us, so we will study the play in our English lessons. In Maths, we will be working on year 7 Transition units, Shape and Space and Extended problem solving, as well as Understanding number sequences and algebra. |

Dear Parents, 6/1/09 This term we will be welcoming fifteen new children to our class. From experience, some of the ‘older’ children in the class find this a little unsettling at first. However, this is short lived, and the dynamics of the class are soon re-established.As last term, please encourage your child's independents by allowing them to line up in the morning, and come into school with their friends. Mrs Proffitt and I will always be there to help your child once inside. - Encouraging independence does not of course mean that you are not welcome in school! I am always available if you need to see me about any concerns. Please continue to work with your child on reading skills. It was wonderful to see the progress that most children made last term. We will continue to work on blending our letter sounds. Your child should have their letters on a string from last term. If you take the letters off the string can your child build any three letter(cvc - consonant vowel constant ) words? Keep this simple to begin in order that their cofidence begins to grow. Number work will continue to develop early addition and subtraction skills. This will mainly be explored through practical activities. Some of our work this term will be based on dinosaurs. Any stories or poems related to dinosaurs will be most welcome if your child would like to share them with us. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy New Year. Thank you for your support. Mrs. Clarke and Mrs Proffitt |

Dear Parents, Welcome back to what I hope will be a happy and successful second term in Class 2. Our topics in Religious Education for this term are explained in the accompanying leaflet. I know it is difficult and we all lead busy lives but it does make a real difference if the children have the opportunity to enjoy and share their books with their parents. We will be concentrating on knowledge of number bonds to 20 ( i.e. the children should be able to add and subtract any two numbers up to twenty without having to use any apparatus including fingers!) and will continue to learn the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.ii) Shape, Space and Measures – recognising hexagons, pentagons, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and describing them in terms of vertices, sides/edges and faces; recognising right-angled corners in 2D and 3D shapes; understanding rotation of angle; turning through right angles ¼, ½ and whole turns; recognising different types of movement including translation, rotation and reflection. In History our topic is the Great Fire of London. All of the children responded to our history topic last term very enthusiastically so we hope to harness this enthusiasm in our new topic. Our Geography topic ‘An Island Home’ will give us the opportunity to look more closely at island life in Guernsey as well as comparing and contrasting it with our own lives in Devon.
