Class 6

26th April 2010

Dear Parents and Carers

We hope you all enjoyed a sunny Easter break.  We’re looking forward to working with your children for their last term with us, a very important time.

Firstly, we need to let you know that the SATS tests will take place from Monday 10th to Thursday 13th May, in English and Maths.  Until this time, the homework routine will be more or less as it has been, with English and Maths tasks set on Tuesday and Friday, but spelling won’t be set on Mondays. After half term, homework will be researching and preparing for the Year Six public speaking competition at the end of term. The children will give their presentation in class and the final ten will then speak to the judges, who will award first, second and third place.  They should aim to speak for three to five minutes on a topic of their choice, using cue cards but no props.

After half term, we will be covering sex education in class, which is taught sensitively and in line with Catholic thinking on the importance of family life and positive relationships.  If you have any questions, you are welcome to call in and ask us about it. We use some BBC video material “Growing up” and there are opportunities for the children to ask questions.

Our RE topics this term will be: Easter, Freedom and Responsibility, and Special Places.

In Geography, we will be studying Mountains and Coasts

Art will encompass People in Action, and we’ll be making Vehicles in Design and technology.

In Science, our topics will be Habitats and Interpendence, Microorganisms and Keeping Healthy, which will tie in with our PSHE work on Relationships and Changes.

We’re reading a non-fiction text in French, about Space.

We want to make this term as much fun as we can, and we’re busy organising a Big Day Out to Woodlands, as well as a bowling trip before we arrive at PGL; dates and costs to follow as soon as possible.

Some dates for your diary (more to follow)

  • ECC Welcome evenings  – Monday 5th and Tuesday 7th July
  • ECC Welcome days for the children – Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th July
  • Public Speaking Final for year 6 and the winners from classes 3,4 and 5 – Wednesday 14th July

Our door is always open and you are very welcome to come and discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s progress at this important time.
